The History of

Trees of the Woods Farm

Purchased in 1968 by George C. Woods as a summer retreat for his family, Trees of the Woods took root as George's son, Doug, took an active interest in farming.  Planting began in 1974 with the entire family and recruited friends pitching in to assist.  The first species planted were Douglas Fir and White Pine.

As George and his son Doug learned more about their new business, sales began climbing.  Soon more species were added: Scotch Pine, Blue Spruce, and Norway Spruce.  By 1994, the farm was more than a side business and Doug quit his thirteen year job as a landscape foreman in Northern New Jersey to concentrate on running the farm full-time.  Meanwhile, George had retired from a top sales position and dedicated himself to marketing for the business.  He was a natural salesman, and has been sorely missed since his passing in 1998.

Our Container Stock division, reinstated in 1997, is responsible for a respectable percentage of our sales.  Expanding from woody ornamentals into perennials, we are proud of the success of this area.  In 1999, we began our deciduous ball and burlap area.  We've included flowering ornamentals as well as traditional shade trees in this area.  They have come along beautifully and are a popular line with our customers.  In response to increased demand by retail customers, Doug and Joan branched out in 2004.  A parcel of land off busy Route 52 in White Sulphur Springs was purchased and together, they built Everlasting Spring Garden Center.  The retail garden center purchases as much stock as possible from the liners grown on Trees of the Woods Farm, enabling the stock to continue to thrive in the local climate to which it is already adapted. Trees of the Woods continues to serve as a retail Choose & Cut Christmas Tree Farm as well as a wholesale outlet for both Christmas and Landscaping trades.
